Well, now that you’ve finished reading all about how we’re
getting settled in, let me announce that we are moving! Haha Been keeping to
ourselves as we were hoping the situation would be resolved but it’s come to a
point now where the only resolution is moving. Our host family isn’t working
out for us, so we will be leaving next week. I don’t want to go into detail as
it’s not worth repeating. All that matters is that we have found a new place to
live! We are really excited about it! It’s a family that was chosen by Eric’s
School originally, however when the APCD came to inspect they weren’t home so
they went with the one we’re at now. It’s basically the exact same set up as
where we are now, a two room building separate from the main house. Although
this house is more of a house (as opposed to where we are now which is somewhat
of a mix between grass shack and house.) We still don’t have running water but
we do have electricity! The family seemed excited to have us (or at least more
than indifferent) and we are excited to get to know them. As of right now we
are trying to maintain the renter/rentee situation we have going with our
current placement. However we are hopeful to have a bit more in our next
placement. Don’t worry we will still be in the same village and working at the
same schools. We are just moving down the way a bit (aprox. 5 city blocks.) All
I know is that the mother is gone during the week (working in another city) and
the eldest daughter stays home with the children during the week. I’m not sure
if the children are the eldest daughter’s children or what but I guess we’ll
find out! Today when we went to see it (briefly) I saw the eldest daughter
(maybe young 30’s) and she had a baby on her back, along with a teenager that
was around as well. We also had the opportunity to meet the gogo (grandma)
briefly as well. I’m looking forward to
a fresh start and I’m excited to get a move on! Nthabiseng (our APCD) will be
out to inspect the house (to make sure it passes PC guidelines) on Wednesday
Oct. 9th so hopefully we can move the same day. That will mark
exactly one month in this house and we won’t have to worry about pro-rating any
electricity or rent (which is more pertinent in this specific situation than
I’d care to explain.) Luckily both Eric and I’s principals have bakkies
(pick-up trucks) so it should be pretty easy for us to move. I’m hoping we can
get it done in just 1 or two trips (remember we’ve accumulated a double bed and
2 wardrobes, along with a fridge and a stoven.) What I’m most stoked about
right now is the way that my principal reacted to all of this. We spoke to him
about our problem previously and he came to speak with the family within 30
minutes of our conversation. Then now that the problem hasn’t subsided we spoke
to him about it again on Monday when he stopped by for a visit. Today being
Tuesday (our first day back at school after our break) and he already had 2
possible housing options lined up and was ready to take me to see them. We
visited a mission that we were thinking about renting from however it was only
one room which is against PC policy (for couples.) So we moved on and
eventually came to the idea of going with the placement that Eric’s school had
originally found. He made a few phone calls and by noon Eric and I were going
for a visit. We will hopefully have burglar bars installed before we arrive (my
principal is getting quotes from 3 different companies) and then we’ll be set
to go! I can’t imagine it not passing Nthabiseng’s guidelines as it’s literally
the same set up that we have now (physically) and in fact it’s a bit better!
(It has a real light switch and a real plug in the wall!) Anyway! That’s the
update for today! Now I know I told you guys that we have internet now but
please keep in mind that we pay for data that we use and it’s on a monthly
plan. Unfortunately I ran out of data when I uploaded all those pictures (as we
got it only a few days before the month was up it only had a little bit of
data) so a lot of my posts will be delayed but it’s the best we can do! And of
course right now we are having some technical difficulties (it’s the first and
it should have automatically recharged) however it didn't. So we’re hoping it
will recharge on the 8th when it was purchased originally. To leave
you all with my favorite sentence to use in the Peace Corps “we’ll find out!”
Turns out! It recharges on the 2nd! Hahaha!
Thanks... So sad we can't help you move... NOT... Lol
ReplyDeleteShared this with friends and they love the way you write... Keep it up!
